Self-evaluation of the reading presentations

Dear FLE 304 members,
Please evaluate your own performance as a pair/group by referring to each of the aspects the self-evaluation sheet that your instructor has provided for you. You need to make comments on the preparation stage and the actual teaching stage and the audience's perceptions of your presentation.

  1. while choosing the topic of reading passage, we thought that it should take our friends attention so that they could participate actively.we decided to prepare activities including comprehensible and ample input.I think warm-up session and pre-reading discussion questions were very effective in linking the topic with their daily lives.Predict table was another useful strategy I think that increased comprehension and made students actively participate in the lesson.finding title activity was a unique activity,we really thought on it while preparing and on my opinion, it was useful to check that studetns really comprehend the passage.true false activity was also another technique to measure students' comprehension on the topic.so, by looking our friends performance, I came up with a conclusion that everything was clear and understood. I think our acitivties were well-organized and varied, but not over-loaded.so, they were all good, I think.one point that ı would like to highlight is that we asked students to make bloody mary role play.but it was a bit misunderstood.first of all,we didn't plan it as a post-reading activity,we planned it as a contingency plan just for fun.actually we wanna apply it a bit different.we have thought about showing a video from the film bloody mary and then asked studetns to role play, but since we didn't have enough time to do this since it was just a 20 minutes lesson.as an adi,we used powerpoint, handouts and a mirror for role play as a realia.I think, they were all effective to make the lesson more interesting.rwading was the skill that was supposed to be developed most since it was a reading lesson.however, we were planning to give a homework and asked them to search for other superstions about mirrors and wrte down what they have found and brnig to the next lesson.so,we also planned to asked them to use their writing skills.this was the only point that we missed in the lesson.we just forgot to say the homework because of the atmosphere of the presentation:))except this point, I think we were able to appy our lesson plan to the classroom successfully.I hope,my friends would also find the presentation useful.except the last acitivity, participation was good,it was an interactive lesson and everyone tried to participate in the lesson.we gave the instructions clearly and our friends didn't have difficulty in understanding and appyling them.we had no difficulty to control the class, since each of our friends was a responsible individual.Im glad to make this presentation to my friends and I hope they also are glad to participate this presentation:))

  2. We tried to choose an interesting topic in order to make the presentation more enjoyable and selected a story about the first marathon. In warm up and pre reading we wanted to give some short information about the olympics and marathon.I think our photos related to the topic and also those information made the topic familiar to everyone in the classroom. In while reading we divided the story in four parts, made four groups and gave one part to one group. Each group had one different part. One person from each group summarized the part and after listening all parts students put the parts in true order. This activity was effective I think since they had one part of the story they were curious about the other parts. So reading the passage became enjoyable for them In post reading we made match and fill in the gaps activities. Our presentation and topic was good I think but my instructions couldn't be understood at the beginning then I tried to be more clear.

  3. I and Seda tried to select an enjoyable topic by thinking our real students that are 13- 14 years old, elementary students. We thought that “magic” was an interesting topic for the students at these ages. Our reading passage was a short story “The Magic Pot”. We provided our students with different activities related to this topic. We tried to integrate speaking, listening and writing skills with reading. Wish clauses were previous knowledge for our students. By making them use in the post-reading activity, we tried to activate our students’ existing knowledge. In this way, we saw whether they comprehended “wish clauses” or not as well. We prepared a powerpoint presentation to create context and start the lesson. We did our best to explain the unknown parts and correct the wrong answers. With the help of true/false exercises, we tried to make everything clear for our students. In this stage they held smiling or sad faces according to their responses. We selected this technique intentionally to increase the participation rate and not to make them bored just by saying true or false. Everything went as we had planned. I hope all of my friends both enjoyed and learned something in our short reading lesson. At the end of the lesson we were happy with our performance. I hope all of my friends think the same:))

    Preparation:

    1. We think, our lesson plan was very useful because it helped us to know what to do during the lesson. Also, we followed every part of our lesson as all the steps of our lesson were clearly stated, so we didn’t have any problem about following it.
    2. Of course, we had some difficulties while preparing our lesson plan. First of all, we thought about our topic for a long time before we started our planning. We wanted to choose an enjoyable topic to attract the attention of the students as it is an important factor in teaching. Secondly, we didn’t want to focus on developing only one skill which was reading during the lesson eventhough it was “teaching reading”, so we tried to find some integrated activities which might help students not to disregard other skills. Thus, choosing the activities took longer than we expected. These are the difficulties we had in planning our lesson.
    3. To start with, the reading passage (story) that we chose was a little bit long, so it might cause the students to have bad impression on the passage as they might not want to read the whole text. For this reason, we would choose a shorter reading passage. Moreover, while teaching our lesson, we didn’t give any purpose before wanting the students to read the text and this might make the students to read the passage aimlessly which might cause the decrease in their comprehension level. Thus, we would give a purpose before distributing the reading passage.

    Teaching:

    1. Overall, the lesson was successful. We could do everything that we planned without any problem.
    2. We think, the most successful part of our lesson was the matching activity which was a post-reading activity because after the students matched the words with their correct meanings, we showed some pictures related to the vocabulary via PowerPoint presentation, so this helped the students to learn the vocabulary more easily as this provided them with visual aid.
    3. We think, the least successful part of our lesson was the part after we distributed the reading passage. We didn’t give a purpose which they would take into consideration while reading the passage. Because students might get lost while they were reading the long text.
    4. We couldn’t exactly make sure that all of the students understood. However; the while-reading activity which included giving a correct order to the parts of the story by attaching the parts near the correct pictures from the story. We might have a chance to know the comprehension level of the students.
    5. We used PowerPoint presentation which contributed to the lesson visually, a board marker to draw a concept map about skiing to refresh the already existing schemata in the students’ minds and colorful cardboards to make the while-reading activity enjoyable.
    6. We tried to develop firstly the reading skills but we didn’t limit our lesson only to reading skill. We also wanted to develop speaking skill by asking the students to tell the story by using their own words during the while-reading activity and writing skill with the help of giving a writing homework, as well.
    7. The warm-up session gave us most difficulty because attracting the students’ attention and making them ready for the lesson wasn’t an easy job.

    The students:

    1. We think, the while reading activity which includes giving an order to the story and attaching the parts of the story near the appropriate pictures related to the story was the most enjoyable part for the students because they produced the things that they were asked, not given as all the things in the activity were prepared by the teacher. They had a chance to create the story again and tell it with their own words.
    2. There were some students who didn’t participate. This might result from their being shy or not being able to understand the instructions given during the activities.
    3. Fortunately, we didn’t have any difficulty controlling the class.
    4. The students might tell us that the reading passage shouldn’t have been so long.

  5. hi all!
while we were preparing the reading presentation, first we clarified our studenst' level and decided that it could be intermediate. then we had to find the most suitable reading passage for the students.we searched on the net and found the passage which was 'first born, middle born and last born'. we chose this topic, the birth order, because everyone in the class either first born, middle born or the last born so they definitely have ideas in their minds.as for the lesson plan, we made use of the lesson plan which was metuonline and we wrote step by step what we were going to do in the lesson. mehmet was supposed to do the warm-up session&pre-reading activity then I was supposed to do the while reading activites and the post-reading activity with mehmet. ı think that overall we were successful in our presentation. however, as for my parts I have some points that I can improve.for instance, while doing the comprehension questions, ı just gave feedback the wrong answers nut what I had to was to give the reason of the correct answers.besides if the answer had been wrong, first I would have asked the correct answer to the students.honestly,I was good at for the other parts of the presentation such as giving clear instructions, appropiately employing pair/group/individual. activities. since our topic was interesting, we had not have difficulty in engaging students in the lesson.ın additon to this, we followed the lesson plan step by step which was very helpful.

  6. We tried to make the lesson as interesting as possibel and for that we chose a passage about the man's desie to fly over the years. This passage was especially useful in asking a warm-up question because we thought that every person more or less wants to fly and dreams about it sometimes. We used some pictures to make the lesson also more understandable. After telling the title we wanted students' opinions of what may be in the passage and wrote them on the board. Then we asked them to find their opinions in the passage while organizing the paragraphs. This also inserted a purpose into the task of reading. We thought that these two tasks at the same time may not be so hard because there were only threee paragraphs which were to be ordered and we wanted to make the task more complex without causing too much stress on the students.
In the last activity we asked the students to write a story by using the words that are written in the passage in bold. We tried to use some familiar words because it may take time for them to use the new learned vocabulary in context. The lesson was succesful and Ayşenur and I did not have any difficulties concerning the control of the class and time use. Students were also eager to participate in the lesson.
All in all we were very excited at the beginning of the lesson and there may be some problems because of that, which do not affect the performance of the students as a whole.

  7. as derya stated before we wanted to choose a fun topic for our students, because children can get bored easily and once they get bored with the lesson it is very difficult to make them focus on the lesson.I believe our lesson was good in terms of classroom interactions and variety of the acvities. we tried to intergrate all the aspeacts to our reading lesson. Also, we prepared a contingency and that was related to Harry Potter. we did that because children at that age really love Harry Potter and we wanted to make a plan in case of they get bored or the clas has ended early. we used PPT in order to create a context for our lesson and to generate interest among students. Alsoi we used realias a magic stick and magic box. thus, we made a lesson which was all united in one topic. In the activity with magic stick we wanted students to do practice in speaking and we measured their understanding of the wish clauses. we carefully planned all the lesson so I believe it was a successful lesson.

  8. As merve said before, we chose our topic ‘mirrors’ in order to get the attentions of the students. Since the history and mysterious stories about mirrors are quite interesting, students get easily motivated to the lesson by giving their own comments when they are asked. We also were able to get their attention by talking about their usage of the mirrors, which created a daily life topic context. The prediction table, which we used in the pre- reading part was also successful at increasing the students’ comprehension. They were able to see what is waiting for them in the reading session. Finding the title for each paragraph was a successful activity in my opinion and it was an original one. True-false activity was also one of the best sides of our presentation, because whole class participated while answering the questions and checking the answers. I think our activities were well-organized and varied, but not over-loaded. So, they were all good. However, the last role-playing part was not as good as I expected, because students did not want to act out. Therefore, it may be a better idea to apply this activity with young learners. Another successful part of our micro-teaching was that we were strict to our lesson plan and our time planning was good, I think. We finished each activity in time. Despite some little mistakes, our presentation was good and interactive in my opinion.

  9. Before starting to prepare our presentation we decided that the level should be intermediate and accordingly we chose our topic as "Birth Order". We thought that the topic is very interesting and ir appels to everyone in the class because the passage was groupping people in terms of "first-born, middle-born and last-born". ın this way we thought taht the student participation should be higher since any student in the class was whether a first-born, middle-born and last-born child and they could find something related to them. we used appropirate pictures related to our topic on the slides. after creating a schemata on students' mind we went on with reading passage. There were various activities ranging from gusessing to comprehension activities. the most affective part was the last groupping activity, I think, where students were given the chance to talk about themselves. My partner and I did our best, I think. however on my part I can say that I should be more careful about classroom management. I remember a time when ı felt that I lost the control of the class. Nevertheless everything went well and on general we were quite successful as future english teachers!!! :)

    İlkay YENİADIM

    Hi all!
Ilkay and I had a little bit difficulty in finding an appropriate topic for our presentation. After a long search, we decided to select “child labor” as our topic. We thought that it might be both interesting and informative for our students which were 15-17 years old. We wanted them to gain social awareness of current problems of the country.
We taught new vocabulary with the help of pictures on PowerPoint so that their learning would be permanent. Guessing activity was prepared for the purpose of attracting students’ attention to the passage before they read. We aimed at practicing new learned vocabulary with matching activity. We designed the post-reading activity in groups for it enables interaction and makes the found solutions more reliable due to being a result of consensus. Also, it will give the students the chance to understand the importance of unity, cooperation, friendship and consensus among themselves in face of problems. In our opinion, the best solutions are expected from the children since the problem is about them.
In our opinion, the lesson was successful except for some points. For instance, it would be better if we had done an additional activity such as comprehension questions. Actually, we prepared a true false activity to check their comprehension but it was a mistake to put it in contingency plan. :)
In conclusion, micro teachings are helpful for us because we realize our own mistakes and improve ourselves through these mistakes.
