ReplyDeleteHello,
In this video, there is no one, single strategy for reading. I cannot say this is the best strategy or another one is the best. I think according to environment, background, age, proficiency level, type of reading passage, purpose of reading and some more other reasons, it depends,so I choose this video which includes different techniques that I find creative and interesting.as said in the beginning of the video, strategies used in this video are applicable for any context and any level.first strategy is reader response which means students will recognize the beliefs, prior knowledge, past experiences they bring to the text they read.Making connection with their own life helps capture the meaning of the context.it becomes more easy to understand the context if they make connection. To use this strategy, however the teacher should be careful about the topic she chooses.the context ought to be appropriate to their lifestyle, age level..second technique is text coding that means students use some specific codes while reading the text.Coding also helps in the way that it makes the passage more systematic and comprehensible.it also time-saving strategy,as after reading, students just look at that part and learn what they wonder, or while looking at the answer, they just look at specific part according to their coding.third strategy is readers theatre.this is really good technique to make comprehension perfect.if the reading is consolidated with acting, then there is no way to not understand or forget it.However,it may not be suitable for all levels or reading context.you cannot use this technique for a passage about abstract subject.forth strategy is double entry organizer and in this strategy students takes notes while reading and this makes comprehension easy.they can use this notes while doing after reading activities.fifth technique is think aloud.this helps students develop their metacognitive skills.sixth strategy is anticipation guide.students identify what they know before reading the text and what they learn after reading the text.the points that I find insufficient or wrong are that for instance, text coding strategy is useful for intensive reading.if you really have to analysis a passage you can use this strategy.for readers theatre strategy,as I said before, you cannot use it for abstract contexts and it is good for young learners, older learners may find this strategy boring. and think aloud technique is, I think, more appropriate for problem solving rather than reading.almost in all strategies students are actively participating and this is also good point. however, most of the strategies are prepared for young learners so teachers should think about other potential strategies for older learners.

I have chosen this video, because it shows reading skills, which I want to teach to my students in the future clearly. It is not a reading session in the classroom, but teacher in the video shows the students what they will do during their reading activities. He mentions seven factors of the reading skills. These are: retelling, inferencing, prediction, envisioning, connection, question, and critique. The first four of them are all about the text in order to understand it, however the last three factors includes the things out of the text. Therefore, these skills improve our comprehension in anyway. If teacher applies these skills to reading lessons, it will be very helpful for students to deal with reading activities. These seven factors are the exact things which a student needs to know in order to improve her/his reading skills.

This video shows a good approach to teaching reading comprehension as it mentions some important strategies in how to attract the students' attention and how to make the reading material more enjoyable. First we need to select our texts from various authentic sources to increase vocabulary. But these earned vocabulary also should be the words they can use in their environment. Most importantly, the teacher should make it fun. We can make it more interactive by letting them predict the context of the text from the title or vice versa. Using the skimming technique can make the students more ready for analizing the text further. And for the new vocabulary, it is better not to give the meaning directly but to explain it using the text itself. We can also use other materials like powerpoint slides to show some important vocabulary; which adds variety and makes it less boring. And another highly important point is to make the students connect with the text by finding some connections between their lives and environment and the context of the material. This is a key factor to enhance their comprehension as students find the text they can associate with themselves more understandable and more interesting.

I liked this video because it mentions some techniques to improve reading skills. Moreover,The teacher in the video thinks that we ( teachers of the future ) can have the students be interested in reading. Also, there are some ways to make the reading classes interesting. Another thing is that the teacher in the video thinks that students should have the listening skills as well. He argues that when there is a text read aloud in the class, with unimproved listening skills students cannot get the reading skills as well. He mentions the two popular techniques ( bottom-up and top-down) as well and gives some information how to use them. So, this video is a source for elt students to get some keys for improving reading skills.

ReplyDeleteThis is an example for Jigsaw reading lesson. The teacher activates the background knowledge about the texts to increase the comprehension before the reading really begins. He asks questions about what they know about the countries that will be mentioned in the texts. Then, he tries to make them familiar to the task and check the vocabulary. While doing this he ask them work in pairs. Peer working decreases the affective filter. After they choose the unknown words, he teaches the key words beforehand. Pre-reading prediction is again is helpful to activate background knowledge and to make the input more comprehensible. Then he uses jigsaw and give different text for each group. Jigsaw is an instructional technique that promotes co-operative learning in creating or in learning content It is based on dividing a task among students so that they must pool their contributions to complete an assignment. The students work in pair, which, I believe, increases the percentage of learning well. In the end they share knowledge and he can see the personal reaction to the text. In addition to all of these techniques he applies in this class, I think extensive reading should be encouraged, too.

ReplyDeleteI choose this video because ı think the tecnique the teacher is talking about is very effective. Because reading without comprehension is really nothing. Therofore, while reading you sometimes should stop and question about what you understand.

I find this video quite useful for teaching reading. The man advises practical ways of making reading classes more enjoyable. As he says in the video, reading texts are usually boring for students. Reading courses are boring especially in crowded classrooms. Instead of reading the text and afterwards answering the comprehension questions, more dynamic activities can be done in order to grasp students’ attention. For example, interactive dictation might be an enjoyable activity for learners. In this activity, students work in pairs. Each student has a different text. They dictate their reading to their partners in turn.
Another important point which is mentioned in the video is ‘integration of skills’. While reading the text, students can also listen to it. In this way, they not only do reading but also learn some pronunciation. Reading classes turn out to be more beneficial and entertaining by using these methods.

ReplyDeleteI think there are some enjoyable ways in this video that can make the reading lessons more enjoyable. For example the best part of the video is that He doesn't think that reading is done just to read something. He says that while reading we are developing our language skills at the same time. Listening version of the reading text can both develop student's reading and listening skills. Preparing an enjoyable exercise can make the most boring reading text enjoyable. Top - down and bottom-up tecniques can be very helpful for students to grasp the gist of the topic.

ReplyDeleteI liked this video because it emphasizes the importance of prior knowledge for successfully dealing with a reading passage. Maybe that’s an important point which I would miss if I were a teacher now. Of course, teaching some reading strategies to the students is important. But, how they can make use of their knowledge about the world while reading a passage should also be discussed and students should be provided with some advice about this.

ReplyDeleteI like this video because it gives importance to the several strategies in reading. To be able to apply the best or the most appropriate strategy in reading, the level of the students and the purpose of the reading are crucial in that point, I believe. Thus, these will improve their reading skills and comprehension as well. The first one is called as ‘Reader Response’ which is related to the students’ recognition of the beliefs, prior knowledge and past experiences. The second one is ‘Text Coding’ which students will keep track of their thinking while reading a text using codes. Another one is ‘Reader Theatre’ and it is a kind of strategy which students will dramatize a text and sharpening their visualization skills for all texts. The fourth one is ‘Double Entry Organizer ‘which students will organize notes during the reading of a text. The next one is ‘Think Aloud’ which aims to develop the students’ metacognitive skills. In anticipation guide students will identify what they know before reading a text and what they learn after reading a text. In the video , the teachers are very effective by using the single strategy.Lastly, I think it is very essential that you are aware of the purpose of the reading. Then one should apply the best strategy by integrating the necessary skills.

I chose this video because it really reflects my thoughts in teaching EFL reading. The video supports the idea that we should have enough vocabulary knowledge while reading, it is obvious, but it is not the only requirement in this process. Knowing vocabulary is just one of the pieces of a puzzle. In the video, it is emphasized that we need to know more than vocabulary to read with understanding. We need knowledge of the world. Even if we know all of the words in the text and the sentences are easy enough to understand, much of what we read would be ambiguous if we didn’t have previous knowledge. The texts have information gaps and we should fill these blanks with our background knowledge. We can’t understand everything we read even though we know vocabulary. Comprehension requires previous knowledge. To resolve ambiguities and connect ideas in the reading texts, we should know something about the world. In a way, “Teaching content is teaching reading” as the title of the video implies. “Knowing the subject” makes us “good readers”.

first of all this video shows how can reading be taught through games. the place in the video is not a classroom but it is applicable to EFL classrroms as well. this video reflects my style of teaching reading because in this video students are playing a reading game and have fun while they are learning. I believe when students do not find the topic interesting or enjoy the lesson, they usually close their minds to learning. they often pretend to be learning and seem on work, but they daydream and refuse to learn. therefore, I think teacher should make the reading as interesting as possible for students when it comes to teaching reading, so that s/he can do an effective lesson.By this way teacher can also attract students'attention to the lesson and they may start to enjoy the learning process. Playing games is a very good way of this kind of lesson. In this video there is a game that may be useful in EFL classrroms.Students'have fun while they are reading. such kind of a game can be played by grouping students and effectiveness can be controlled by teacher monitoring. Besides, students in this video may improve their reading skills by finding other creative games related to reading and they can use dictionaries in such kind of activties in order to provide more vocabulary. also, while playing such a game teaacher may emphasize in some points like some vocabulary or grammar, and then after the game s/he may teach these aspects of langage to students. by this way students see the new information in a context and as they have fun their learning may be permanent, hopefully:))

ReplyDeleteHI EVERYONE!
I chose this video since the methods used or suggested by the teachers are very creative and interesting. As we know that students generally don't like reading very much. they see it as a burden. So it is very important to make students interested in reading course. This needs some different tecniques. And some techniques which can be applied in classrooms are clearly shown in this video. Especially the method uder the title of "text coding" can be very useful because by this way students can focus more on comprehension rather than just doing reading stuff. Another motive behind why I chose this video is that all the techniques are justified i.e. the rationale behind why we should use them are clearly explained and they are very plausible.....

I chose this video because it is taken in a class in Turkey. The learners are lower intermediate level and they have read a book and discussing it in the class. It in a way reflects my thoughts about teaching reading because the teacher used a material almost authentic “almost” because it is the learner version of the real book “The End of Innocence: The Body” teacher asks questions about the nature of the characters and their transformation process throughout the book. She urges them a little bit about the title which I think is very important for understanding what the book is about. For some time they worked in small groups (collaboration) and teacher wandered between the groups to see how they are doing. She said in the beginning that the students are preparing for the TOEFL exam but she does not seem to make students read some texts and answer multiple choice questions and I really liked it.

ReplyDeleteThe question is choose the video that best reflects your approach but I think there is no best approach or style because each class, student and environemt has different characteristics. So I couldn’t choose the video easily because the videos I watched all have a point that I don’t agree or I will not apply in my classroom. Finally I saw this video and in this video there are different styles and examples from different classrooms. Some teachers talk about their strategies. For example, I like the text coding as it helps both teacher and students. I will use this strategy in my class. I think students should be active and discuss what they read. I am opposed to teacher reading the text three times then ask questions about it. I got many strategies from this video.

I have choosen this video because first of all, the teacher starts her lesson by telling the characteristics of a good reader so that the students know what to do while reading. It is a good way to create a good reader image in student’s minds and prepare them for the activity. The teacher tells about a tecnique which helps the students while reading which is ‘picturing’. It is a good way for students to make what they read more and more concrete so that they can understand easily. The teacher also gives importance to thinking while reading, so it may increase the comprehension level of the students. The students in this video have read the book three times, one of them is in the classroom and the other two ones are at their homes, so repetition may be helpful while doing the reading activities. Moreover, I like the way that the students answer the reading comprehension questions by pushing the colourful buttons in front of them because it may be enjoyable for the students and they don’t get bored as the activity is like a game. I like the interactive classroom environment a lot, as well. While doing the activity, the teacher makes references to the book so that the students can remember what they have read, this is also a good way to help students not to get lost during the activity. As a prospective teacher, I may use this kind of a technique while doing a reading comprehension activity.

ReplyDeleteI like this videos because it is about the teacher guideness to the students for reading. She helps them and engourages to read in the classroom. Teacher is ready for the students as a guide to help while the students are reading.
