Dear FLE 304 members,
The folowing is a useful technique that you can use at the pre- and post-reading stages of teaching reading. You can go to website http://www.wordle.net/ and click on the icon"create your own". Then paste your text and click on the icon"go". You will get a nice design full of key words in the text. Please comment on how we can use this technique in teaching reading.

In my opinion, “tag clouds” is both enjoyable and beneficial technique that can be used at the pre- and post-reading steps of teaching reading. Since it is visually appealing, especially students who have visual intelligence interest in this technique. It is a pleasant design fraught with keywords in the text. Teacher can give such a nice tag cloud in the pre-reading stage and make students predict what the text is about. By making guesses, students become more attracted to the lesson and the level of their interest and motivation increases. They compete with each other to make the correct guess. This gives them more initiative to participate in the lesson. Maybe they don’t know all of the words in the tag cloud and this technique is also effective to find out whether students have enough vocabulary knowledge to read and comprehend the text. Using tag cloud as a post-reading activity is also possible. In this stage maybe teacher gives students a topic and asks them to create their own tag cloud including the words related to the given topic. This activates their previous knowledge as well. They write or explain their tag cloud orally and it a tool to integrate reading lesson with speaking or writing.
ReplyDeleteHi! "Tag clouds" is a very useful technique both for the students and the teachers. First of all, teachers can make use of this technique when they are teaching vocabulary. They can select the prominent words to teach by using this website. As Derya said, teachers can make use of tag clouds to make students guess the content of the reading text at pre-reading stage. In addition to this, students can be asked to write a short story by using those words as a post-reading activity. In this way, teacher will have the chance to check whether students really learned the vocabulary or not.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteTag clouds seem really nice especially for the activities of pre reading. We can prepare a tag cloud and by showing it in the class we ca ask the students to guess the topic of the passage and to talk about it with a few sentences. It makes it easier for students to understand the text. And the teacher may even ask the students to prepare their own tag clouds in groups of two to four on a given subject. This also enhances the collaboration in the class and it is handy as a post reading activity.
Tag clouds can be really useful for the teachers. Teachers can use them during pre-reading or post reading. It provides students visual materials and these visual things are motivitaing factors. At the pre-reading stage, guessing activity could be useful since students can improve thier creative thinking by brain storming. There can come out different ideas, which takes the interst of students and they try to product more ideas. Since they are motivated at the beginning of the lesson, they will be motivated until the end of the lesson.
ReplyDeleteTag clouds are very good. For the activities of pre reading or vocabulary teaching they are very useful. It helps students comprehend the text. So it makes teacher’s work easy. Moreover it can be also used as a post-reading activity such as writing a paragraph with using those words. Then the teacher can make students evaluate peer’s paragraph and this also improve their collaboration.
ReplyDeleteTag clouds can be used in reading and writing lessons. It gave students the chance of comprehending texts more easily because it facilitates the process of learning vocabulary.Vocabulary teaching is one of the most difficult of the skills that are developed by teachers. Vocabulary teaching requires interesting and effective techniques to make students really acquire new vocabulary. Tag clouds can be seen as one of these effective techniques. It is really helpful for both teachers and students in vocabulary learning and teaching process. Also, by using tag clouds teacher can prepare very well post reading activities as Semra said because it develops both comprehension and acquiring vocabulary of the students.
ReplyDeleteTo start with, tag clouds are very useful and helpful because it provides students with visual data and attracts them visually. I think, visual aids are very important to make the things more and more concrete and enjoyable for students. Tag clouds are very suitable for using as a pre-reading activity. The teacher may teach the vocabulary of a reading passage with the help of a tag cloud or show some words in a tag cloud to make the students guess about what the reading passage is about. It may also encourage the students and increase their motivation to participate in the class because it is a very different technique and more enjoyable than the classical vocabulary teaching techniques. Another possible activity including tag clouds may be a fill-in-the-blanks activity. The teacher may do a post-reading activity by using tag clouds. He/she gave some sentences with blanks to the students and gave the missing word in a tag cloud and the students find the necessary word from the tag cloud and fill the blanks with them. It may be an enjoyable activity, as well.
