Self-evaluation of the writing presentations

Dear FLE 304 members,
Please evaluate your own performance as a pair/group by referring to each of the aspects the self-evaluation sheet that your instructor has provided for you. You need to make comments on the preparation stage and the actual teaching stage and the audience's perceptions of your presentation.

  1. at first, ı had no idea how to do a writing presentation. I didn't have any idea about what can be done as a writing activity. but after the teacher's demo and hand outs that she disributed, something came to my mind. we, dilara and I, decided to make presentation to younger children. I mean, firstly we decided on the age and proficiency level of students. we decided elementary level of students at basic department of english. then we started to think about the topic. we thought that it should be both interesting for the studetns and it also should be related to their lives or it should be current topic. then we said that the most close miportant event is christmas, so we decided on the topic like that. then we thought about which acitivites to do. to get studetns' attention to the topic, we decided to ask them about their past experinces in christmas and their plans for this christmas. then to give extrainformation and make them familiar with the topic, we decided to present a slide show about Santa Claus. we thought these activities as a pre writing activity. then as a while writing acitivity, we thought we should prapare such an activity that all students can participate in this activity. so we prapared such activity. ıt required students' cooperation, attention and creativity. we expected them to use their imaginary, however to provide harmony, we gave them some clues( pictures and vocabulary items). weasked them to form three groups, in each group, same number of people included. then we gave clear instructions, ı think. the point that was a bit differetn from our lesson plan was that the song 'jingle bells' we planned to play this song atthe end of the class, as a contingency plan. however, then we changed our midn and decided to play it while they were doing their writing activity in order to lower affective filter and increase their motivation. and as a post writing activity, we asked them to come to board( one member from each group),they read their paragraphs in order. and not only the teacherbut the whole class participate in this session as well by giving feedback to their friends. as a homework, we asked them to write a cart to one of their friends which ı found again very pratic and useful for their daily life as well.
ı think, the instructions were clear. there was smooth transitions between activities and stages. the while writing activity was a bit challneging and required creativity and imagination. so the students found it efficient, ı hope. the topic certainly took their attention, as these days in everyone's mind there are plans for christmas. participation of the class was good, as well. they were not unwilling to participate. maybe in pre writing stage, some of them avoided of talking. however, as a whole, ı think it was enjoyable and differetn lesson.

  2. hi everyone,
I and derya were sure that witing presentation would be a difficult one because writing isn't well liked by students. therefore, we really wwanted to prepare a fun lesson. we have observed that students find writing classes boring they usually don't want to do the actities or they do the tasks just for the sake of doing it because it is a requirement of the lesson. thus, we wanted to choose a topic that would generate interest among students. that's why we chose famous TV series in America and Turkey. our pre-writing activity was brainstorming with the help of power point slayts. we prepared the presentation in a colorful way and it really worked. we tried to include all kinds of series and so everybody had something to say about them. we asked which series they liked and which was their favourite character. thus, we had a fun brainstorming session and everybody joined in that. we also gave some basic information about series so that they had an idea about them. I think this part of the lesson was quite successful because it really generated interest. then we gave the insteructions about out main activity which was comparing and contrasting a Turkish and an American TV series. at this stage we showed a sample paragraph in order to guide students I believe this idea worked because nobody got lost. I plan to use these strategies in my future career. we make students into the groups of four calling them fork spoon plate and knife then we said set the table. I think it is an enjoyable strategy and very nice. we have copied that from Patricia hoca:) we made a guessing activity and became very glad that it worked. our last activity was an "act out" activity. students were shy to join that activity so we selected some of them. this activity may be applied in different ways. but students had fun in this activity because the video that they watched was a very well liked series how i met your mother:) I believe it was a nice lesson and we enjoyed from presenting it I hope my friends feel the same:) but I wished we had more time and we actually teach some transitions and structures for writing I really wanted to try that maybe in the future we can do that. thanks you all my friends for joining our lesson and Patricia Blinkmen for her ideas and Işıl Hoca for
    giving that chance:)

  3. Actually my dear partner Seda in this long but enjoyable journey said everything related to our microteaching on writing. She explained what we thought in every phase of the lesson quite well. I don’t have many more things to tell, but I will mention just a few points. As she said, we chose such a topic because we knew most of our friends followed these TV series. Our aim was to make them participate in class activities and this topic worked well for this purpose. Since they had background knowledge, it was not hard for them to express their ideas. In short they were interested in our writing topic and activities; it was very good and successful side of the presentation because Seda and I knew that making students engage in writing was a bit problematic. They all joined in class tasks. In the post-writing activity, students were expected to act a dialogue from the video out. First we made them to watch that conversation and then we wanted them to do this activity. By using video, we tried to integrate listening with writing in the lesson and also speaking. Students were exposed to many skills of the language. We prepared a colorful power point presentation for the pre-writing activity to create context and arouse curiosity among students; and also we wrote a sample paragraph of comparing and contrasting TV series. We did such a thing in order not to make students get lost and feel confused about what to do in while-writing stage of the lesson because they were also asked such a paragraph as a real wiring activity. I think it worked because they carried out their tasks without having any difficulty while writing. Overall, in my opinion, it was an enjoyable writing lesson for our friends. I hope they also think in the same way I do:-))

  4. Hi everybod!
I and cennet firstly had to think about the topic for the writing micro-teaching. We wanted to bring the classroom enjoyable and motivating writing topic since in a classic writing lesson we all get bored easily. Therefore, we chose creative writing activity for you. The first activity was about how to take care for a dragon baby as a pet. We showed video about how to take care for a pet to make the students familiar with the subject and then gave the sheet with the picture of a baby dragon on it. As far as I observed, our peers had fun while writing about this baby dragon. This enabled students to think creatively and enjoyed them while writing. With the second story writing activity, they all wrote very good stories. This activities were done as a group activity. The students were talking about their creative ideas and having fun while writing. The important thing was that students should not be bored while doing the activity adn the activity should appeal to their interest. Lastly, I showed a video about the remains of a dragon to make the students know about the reality. The activities are related to each other. However, there were two writing activities and students would be tired of writing. We could integrate a listening into this writing lesson which can make the students feel relaxed. Also, there could be a role play activity after they had written the story. It wa short and the students could turn them into the dialogues and act them.

  5. Hi all,
As İlkay said, we selected “dragon care” as our topic because we thought that it would be interesting and also enjoyable for students to imagine that they have a baby dragon as a pet and to write about how to take care of it. Before the first activity, we showed students a video about how to take care of a pet so that students might get ideas from the video while completing the story about dragon care. We thought that group work might be both easier and more enjoyable than individual work, so we designed this first writing activity as a group work so that students would not have difficulty in completing the story.
For the second activity, we distributed flash cards to each group so that students make use of them while creating the story. We showed them a story as an example so that it would give them some clues for their stories. As students did a lot of writing task, we showed them a part of the documentary about dragons for the post writing activity.
If we did this writing presentation again, we would change the first activity which is about dragon care and prepare a sentence completion or fill-in-the-blanks activity instead of it because the time is limited and two writing tasks required much time to finish.

  6. I think, we got the students’ attention by choosing an interesting topic ‘Christmas’. We mentioned ‘Santa Claus’ in order to get students’ attentions to the topic. Christmas, Santa Claus, presents, festivals are interesting topics for all people, so it was easy to get students’ attention to the lesson. Students were able to improve their speaking skills through discussions; they also had a chance to share their ideas with others. We could see students’ comprehension through feedback session. Students improved their vocabulary knowledge through vocabulary activities.
Writing activity helped students to use their knowledge, which they acquired during this lesson.

  7. hi there!

ı think that Mehmet and I were good at the writing presentation. firstly, we decided that it would be an inteseresting and capturing topic so that the students wanted to take part in the lesson and wanted to write it more willingly. our topic was realated to the aesthetic. at fisrt, we prepared a power point presentation to get their attention because in the PPP, there were lots of photos pf celebrities who had undergone aesthetic surgeries. so , we mentioned the advanteges and the disadvantages of these surgeries. as for the writing part, Mehmet showed an example of it, then we distributed handouts including soem transitions(but we had forgot to add some transitons so thgats the part we bad at). at the end of the class, we showed a video of Micheal JAckson which was interesting. all in all, it was a great expererience.

we think, our lesson plan was useful and attractive as its topic was interesting. “Love”… We prepared a colorful presentation for background and it also helped attract the students’ attention. At first we had a bit difficulty to how to prepare a writing lesson. It was more difficult to prepare it than reading lesson because in writing lesson you want them to create something from rough. We chose love as a topic because love is related to our real lives. Everybody has love in his/her lives. We added activities to make it fun. If we looked at the lesson, it was successful and everything went as we planned. We did not have problem with applying it to class. More activities could be done but our time was limited so we tried to do best in 20 minutes and we did not have problem with time. At first the activity brain storming about love positively and negatively made students think about the topic and remind them of their previous vocabulary. We think before wanting them to write a paragraph and create something, making them watch a video from an animation film was attractive and helpful. They all liked this video and this helped them create a story about the film. Overall it was an enjoyable and attractive lesson.

  9. Firstly, I and my pair Gülden tried to decide on the topic of the presentation and writing activity because selecting an interesting topic that make all of our friends participate in the lesson. So we chose our topic firstly and decide to prepare a microteaching on the friendship because friendship is such a topic that everybody can talk or write about something. The we decided the level of our students and prepared a lesson plan in accordance with their level. We used a video aboutthe features of a good friend to start the lesson and speaking activity. Then we used powerpoint presentation comparing features of good friends and bad friends. The aim of using the video and presentations was to make the lesson more colorful and attractive. Then we wanted them to write a letter to a good friend or bad frien by using adjectives. I think the aim of writing activity was very paralel with the topic that was aimed to teach. So it was both enjoyable, colorful and instructive lesson.I hope that all of my friend liked it also .

  10. My peer Duygu and I at first thought a bit about how to prepare a writing teaching since we had not so many ideas in our minds. Thereofore we used internet very much. In real presentation duygu acted the pre-writing stage. She talked about being famous and made a chart which had advantegeous and disadvantegeous of being famous parts. Later ı distrubued them a hard copy which had famous quotation on it. We wanted them to think about it a bit then talked about their favourite one. They read what they wrote in front of the classroom, which helped them gain self confidence and maybe lessen their anxiety. Also the chart made them see the differences clearly. Using powerpoint was also helpful since it provided visual aid.Lastly, we tried to make them talk as much as possible by integrating speaking actvitiy into our writing activity. However, we need to improve our speaking skills and maybe our fluency.

  11. As mentioned above by some of our friends too, writing isn't an easy skill to make interesting. So first thing we did with Mustafa was to find interesting and creative activities. We thought it would be easier to find an activity, rather than deciding on a topic and limiting the search on that topic. We found a suitable activity which involved vampires. We knew it would grab interest, because it was popular concept nowadays, thanks to Twilight films/books. With some further research we found a very creative writing activity (the post writing activity) and adapted it to our topic. We thought it would be interesting to start with something visual, so found the trailer of the film related to vampires. We also wantede to include a song, but it wasn't easy to find a beautiful and understandable song about vampires.

I think we did pretty well during the presentation. We were more calm. We still had some issues though; like the warm-up and pre-writing sections lasted extremely shorter than we planned, a minor misunderstanding about instructions, and the failed voting process.
